October 19,2009.
Students are excited about their upcoming documentary which they will be making. They are busy researching ideas for a topic and have started learning the steps involved in making a documentary.The students recently took a trip to the Light Factory where they viewed exhibits of Photo-documentary as part of the first step in this learning process.
As part of our Social Studies curriculum, students have been immersed in learning about the textile industry in North Carolina. They are also making teddy bears using different types of textiles.
This week in Class.
Math- We are still focused on numeration. topics such as prime and composite numbers, factors and multiples,and decimals are being learned.
Language Arts- Students continue to become familiar with the different parts of speech and are learning to identify and use these correctly. We are also working on identifying author's purpose, using context clues and finding the main idea.
Science- This week students will begin investigations into the rock and mineral cycle.

This week in Class
Students will be introduced to photo - documentary. They are expected to view still images and write stories to go along with these images. They will also learn how to chose musical pieces from different genres of music to accompany each piece of art.
This will lead to them doing video documentaries later in the school year.
We continue to sharpen our math skills through everyday practice. Students are working on how to solve word problems and numeration, as well as input /output tables. Please help your child with homework and if you have suggestions or concerns please let me know.
Remember that your monthly fee for October is now due. $15.00. If you did not pay for September please bring your account up to date.
Tutoring begins Monday October 5. Letters will go home on Thursday.

Science: Read the article on Filed Guides, then answer the questions.
This Thursday we will be at ImaginOn.
Friday we go to the Farmer's Market.

- Tomorrow we will be having a science presentation at Freedom Park. Parents are asked to pick up students from the park by 3:00pm. Those students who are in after school will be taken back to school.
-Thursday students will finish working on their t-shirt for Spirit Week.
-Friday is half day. Please pick up your child by 1pm.

Week of August 31- Septembey 4, 2009
As we approach this third week of school, students have started to settle into their roles and are working cooperatively in centers. This week we will introduce students to their subject teachers. Students will have Miss Jen for Literacy and Social Studies, while I will teach Math and Science. This means that my students will move to miss Jens room for some subjects while her students will move to my room for others.
This week we will continue working on the water cycle and students will perform their second science experiment. The students are really excited about writing and have written some fabulous stories in their journals.

Math - complete Keeping Skills Sharp
Reading - Read for thirty minutes daily. Read the article "Water Worries", Write notes and questions you have as you read.
Spelling - Use your spelling words to make sentences
Science- Start working on a power point presentation of the water cycle. Use your notes from your research.(May be started in class)

We have started the year off with a bang. The students and I are excited to be back in school after an enjoyable summer break. Last week students decided on their class roles and rules and set goals they wish to achieve this year. Today we had our fist dance class. students were introduced to science vocabulary from the topic "Water Cycle", they then transferred the vocabulary to movement.
Tomorrow students will have "Open Studio" with Miss Lisa. They will start working on their art projects for "Festival in The Park".
